EFT Couples Therapy Intensives
More time to slow down the cycle, understand each other, and rebuild your connection.
Do you and your partner find yourselves having the same arguments over and over again? Maybe one of you reaches out while the other pulls away, or one pushes harder to be heard while the other shuts down. No matter how hard you try, you end up feeling hurt, frustrated, or disconnected.
In Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), we look at these patterns as a cycle that couples get caught in together. Beneath the anger, frustration, or withdrawal, there are often deeper feelings, fears, and needs for connection that are difficult to express or understand.
Weekly couples therapy can be helpful, but it can be difficult to slow down these patterns and get to the deeper emotions when there is limited time to hear both partners and explore what is happening between them.
An EFT intensive gives us more time to slow the cycle down, understand what is happening beneath the conflict, and begin creating new ways of connecting with each other.
What Is an EFT Couples Intensive?
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an approach to couples therapy that helps partners understand the emotional patterns that keep them stuck and strengthen the bond between them.
Often, couples become so caught up in their negative cycle that it becomes difficult to see or hear each other clearly. One partner may react with anger or criticism, while the other withdraws or shuts down. Both may end up feeling alone, misunderstood, or unimportant to the other.
EFT helps couples look beneath these reactions to understand the more vulnerable feelings and attachment needs that are often difficult to share. As partners begin to understand their own experiences and each other’s, they can learn to respond in ways that foster greater emotional safety, closeness, and trust.
An intensive gives us extended time to do this work together, without having to stop just as we begin getting to the heart of what is happening.
Why Choose an EFT Intensive?
- More time to get beyond the negative cycle
Rather than focusing only on what happened during the latest argument, we can spend more time identifying the recurring cycle that keeps bringing you back to the same place. We can slow it down and begin to understand what happens for each of you in those difficult moments. - Space for both partners to be heard
Each partner has their own experience of the relationship, and both deserve time to share it. An intensive allows more room to explore each partner’s emotions, understand what lies beneath their reactions, and help each person feel heard and understood. - Time to reach the deeper emotions
Anger, criticism, withdrawal, and defensiveness can make it difficult to express the more vulnerable feelings underneath. With more time, we can begin exploring the hurt, fear, loneliness, or longing for connection that may be driving the cycle. - An opportunity to create new interactions
Understanding the cycle is an important step, but change also happens when partners begin responding to each other differently. EFT helps couples practice sharing vulnerable emotions and responding with greater openness, care, and emotional responsiveness. - Fewer interruptions to the therapeutic process
In weekly therapy, time can be spent catching up on the latest crisis or conflict before getting back to the deeper work. An intensive gives us a longer stretch of time to stay focused on your relationship, build on what emerges during the session, and work toward new ways of connecting
What Can We Work on Together?
EFT intensives may be helpful if you and your partner:
Keep getting caught in the same painful arguments or patterns of disconnection.
Feel like you cannot reach each other, no matter how hard you try.
Struggle with a pursue-and-withdraw pattern, where one partner pushes for connection and the other pulls away.
Have difficulty expressing vulnerable feelings or asking for what you need.
Are struggling to rebuild emotional safety and trust after being hurt.
Want to feel closer, more understood, and more secure in your relationship.
What Does an EFT Intensive Look Like?
We’ll begin by exploring the concerns bringing you to therapy, the patterns you find yourselves caught in, and what each of you hopes will change.
Together, we’ll develop a plan for your intensive. Depending on your needs, it may take place over a full day or multiple days.
During our time together, we’ll work to identify your negative cycle, explore the emotions and attachment needs beneath your reactions, and help you and your partner begin to share and respond to each other in new ways.
The goal isn’t simply to resolve as many issues as possible in a short time. It’s to help you understand the cycle that keeps you disconnected and begin creating the emotional experiences that allow a more secure bond to develop.
What Happens After the Intensive?
An intensive can help you make meaningful progress, but building a more secure relationship is a process. Some couples choose to continue with follow-up sessions to strengthen new patterns, work through remaining challenges, and continue developing their emotional connection.
Let’s Talk About Whether an EFT Intensive Is Right for You
If you and your partner feel stuck in painful patterns and want more time to work through what is happening between you, an EFT intensive may be worth considering.
I invite you to reach out so we can talk about your relationship, what you hope to work on, and whether an intensive would be a good fit.
You may not be stuck because you don’t care about each other. You may be stuck in a cycle that makes it difficult to feel connected. With time and support, you can begin to understand that cycle and find new ways to reach each other.
